6th Grade Debate Team

Provided by HCES

Course Overview:

Joining the 6th Grade Debate Team requires significant time and effort. Our school is proudly affiliated with the NYC Urban Debate League, engaging in topics that are often quite advanced for 6th graders. You can explore past debate topics by visiting the NYC Urban Debate League and navigating to Resources > Parliamentary Debate. Debate tournaments occur monthly on Saturdays, with the exact schedule to be posted on the NYC Urban Debate League website (https://debate.nyc) at the beginning of the school year. This opportunity is open to students dedicated to actively participating in debate tournaments, representing Hunter College Elementary School for the 2023-2024 academic year. Participation must be confirmed with Mr. Adisa, the HCES Assistant Principal.

Debate team practice begins Wednesday, September 18 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm in the 6th  grade classroom 212. The team meets every Wednesday after school from September 18, 2024 – May 7, 2025.  You will receive more details about the program at the beginning of the school year.

Educational and Personal Growth Impact:

Participating in the debate team offers students more than just a platform to argue their points. It cultivates critical thinking, sharpens research skills, and enhances public speaking abilities. Students learn to construct coherent arguments, think on their feet, and develop a deeper understanding of current events and diverse perspectives. Moreover, being part of a team fosters collaboration, builds confidence, and encourages a sense of responsibility and commitment. The experiences gained through debate will support academic success and contribute to personal growth and future endeavors.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard. [Details about these activities, including club descriptions, schedules, and sign-up information, will be shared during the first week of school.]
