Course Overview:

Discover the Magic of Science with Hawk's Nest Junior Scientist Class!
Prepare to gear up in your lab coat and goggles for an exciting journey of exploration together! The Hawk's Nest Junior Scientist Class caters to young adventurers in grades K-2 who are enthusiastic about unraveling the world's mysteries through hands-on experiments, observations, and discoveries. Students will delve into captivating scientific topics like matter properties, the water cycle, simple machines, and the human body each week. This class is brimming with engaging activities that will ignite curiosity and encourage young scientists to think critically about their surroundings. From hands-on experiments and model building to nature observations, students will participate in a variety of enriching educational experiences. They will also master the scientific method by asking questions, making predictions, and drawing insightful conclusions. Each student will receive their personalized Hawk’s Nest Junior Scientist Lab Coat and Goggles to use throughout the semester. The class will culminate in a group final project showcased at the Hawk’s Nest After School Science Fair.

Sample Lessons:

  • Properties of Matter: Students will investigate the different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) through engaging experiments such as making oobleck and observing ice melting.
  • The Water Cycle: By participating in interactive activities, students will simulate the water cycle and grasp concepts like evaporation, condensation, and precipitation through enjoyable, hands-on projects.
  • Simple Machines: Young scientists will explore how primary machines like levers, pulleys, and inclined planes simplify tasks by constructing their own models and testing their effectiveness.
  • The Human Body: Students will explore the marvels of the human body and understand major organs and systems through interactive activities like putting together a life-sized body puzzle.

Please Note: This course is nonrefundable after 09/04/2024.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard. [Details about these activities, including club descriptions, schedules, and sign-up information, will be shared during the first week of school.]
