Course Overview:

Welcome to Hooray for Clay, where young artists from grades 2-6 dive into the world of pottery and ceramics! This hands-on course is designed for creative minds eager to explore the tactile and expressive art of clay modeling. Throughout the program, students will learn various clay techniques, including hand-building, sculpting, and glazing, allowing them to bring their imaginative creations to life. This class promises an enriching artistic journey that encourages both skill development and personal expression.

Sample Lessons

  1. Introduction to Hand-Building: Students will learn fundamental hand-building techniques, such as pinch pots, coil construction, and slab building, forming the foundation for their clay creations.
  2. Creative Sculpting: Explore the art of sculpting with clay, where students will experiment with different tools and methods to create unique sculptures inspired by their imagination.
  3. Glazing and Firing: Discover the process of glazing and firing, allowing students to add color and finish to their projects, turning their raw clay pieces into polished works of art.
  4. Mixed Media Exploration: Encourage creativity by combining clay with other materials, inspiring students to expand their artistic horizons and experiment with new textures and forms.
  5. Clay Storytelling: Begin the exciting journey of storytelling through clay, where students will learn to craft narrative scenes, expressing stories and emotions through their artistic work.

In Hooray for Clay, students will not only develop their artistic skills but also gain confidence in their ability to express themselves creatively, making this class a transformative experience in their educational journey.

Please Note: This course is nonrefundable after 09/19/2025.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard.
