Class Description

Portrait Drawing for Kids is an engaging and creative afterschool class designed for students in grades 2 through 6. This class invites young artists to explore the fascinating world of portraiture, where they will learn the fundamentals of drawing faces and capturing the unique expressions and features of their subjects.

What to Expect

In this class, students will:

  • Learn Basic Techniques: Participants will be introduced to essential drawing techniques, including proportion, shading, and composition, which are crucial for creating lifelike portraits.
  • Explore Different Mediums: Students will have the opportunity to experiment with various drawing materials such as pencils, charcoal, and pastels, broadening their artistic skills and preferences.
  • Develop Observation Skills: Through guided exercises, students will enhance their ability to observe and replicate facial features and expressions accurately.
  • Express Creativity: While focusing on technical skills, the class also encourages personal expression, allowing students to infuse their portraits with creativity and individuality.

Please Note: This course is nonrefundable after 09/19/2025.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard. [Details about these activities, including club descriptions, schedules, and sign-up information, will be shared during the first week of school.]
