Global Art Explorers

Course Overview:

In Global Art Explorers students will explore a diversified view of art traditions and crafts from various cultures and countries around the world. Through hands-on projects, they’ll learn about unique art techniques, materials, and the history behind each art tradition. Students will discover how art tells stories, reflects traditions, and connects people from various countries.

Participating in Global Art Explorers will not only enhance students' understanding of global cultures but also encourage creativity and critical thinking. By engaging with diverse art forms, students will develop a greater appreciation for cultural diversity and gain insights into the historical and social contexts of different regions. This course aims to foster a sense of global citizenship and empathy, empowering students to appreciate and celebrate the rich tapestry of human creativity.

Sample Lessons:

  • Japanese Origami: This lesson introduces students to the ancient art of origami, the Japanese practice of paper folding. Students will learn about the cultural significance of origami and create various origami models, enhancing their fine motor skills and precision.
  • Mexican Muralism: Students will study the vibrant tradition of muralism in Mexico, focusing on artists like Diego Rivera. They will collaborate to design and paint a mural that reflects a social or cultural theme, learning about the power of art in public spaces.
  • African Mask Making: In this lesson, students will learn about the cultural and ceremonial significance of masks in various African cultures. They will create their own masks using mixed media, exploring symbolism and storytelling through their designs.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard.
