Remarkable Robots + Marvelous Machines

Course Overview:

R2-D2, WALL-E, Transformers… We all remember those futuristic machines. Today
robots are no longer confined to fictional worlds! From self-driving cars to robotic
roller coasters, students learn about sophisticated machines that are tackling
complex tasks– with amazing speed and precision. This Launch class looks at the
fundamentals of engineering and technology necessary to create amazing
contraptions, and then kids construct simplified models of their own to reinforce
the principles learned. From projects such as Motorized Airplane Launchers and
Battle Bots to programmable LEGO WeDo structures, kids at Launch are immersed
in a world of remarkable robots and marvelous machines. Note: At the end of class
sessions kids take home their DIY robots but do not take home projects involving
LEGOWeDo.
Additional Topics Include: Industrial Robots, Autonomy, Control Systems, Motors,
Sensors, Programming, Circuitry

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard.
