Sous Chef Academy

Course Overview:
This class will allow students to recreate their favorite dishes using healthier food choices and learn new recipes from around the world. Students will be exposed to the science behind cooking when combining assorted ingredients with various elements while learning various styles and techniques from different cultures. Students will use hot plates, griddles, and mini-toaster ovens in this class. All students will receive their very own sous chef uniform and utensils.

- Rainbow Pancakes (American Dish): Kids will have a blast as they mix food coloring into their make-from-scratch pancake batter to create colorful and eye-catching pancakes that are as fun to make as they are to eat. Origin: Rainbow Pancakes are a fun and colorful twist on traditional pancakes. They are often associated with American breakfast foods.
- Build-Your-Own Crepes (French Dish): Kids will get to flex their creativity and culinary skills as they fill their crepes with a variety of sweet and savory toppings, from fresh fruits and whipped cream to meats and cheeses of their choice. Origin: Build-your-own crepes are a popular dish in France. Crepes are thin pancakes made from flour, milk, and eggs, and can be filled with sweet or savory ingredients.
- Animal Toasts (Japanese Dish): Who says toast has to be boring? Kids will love using fresh fruits, spreads, and other toppings to create adorable animal faces on their toast creations. Origin: Animal Toast is a cute and creative way to serve toast. This idea originated in Japan, where food presentation is highly valued.
- Flatbread Pizza (Mediterranean Dish): Kids will get to experiment with different ingredients and flavor combinations as they design and bake their delicious flatbread pizzas. Origin: Flatbread Pizza is a popular dish in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. It is made by baking a flat, thin bread topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and various toppings.
- DIY Pasta Bar (Italian Dish): Kids will have fun selecting their pasta shapes and sauces to create their perfect pasta dishes. Origin: DIY Pasta Bar originated in Italy, where pasta is a staple food. It allows guests to customize their own pasta dishes with a variety of sauces, meats, and vegetables.
- Mac & Cheese with a Twist (Southern-American Dish): This classic favorite gets a fun and flavorful update as kids customize their mac & cheese with different mix-ins like bacon, veggies, and more. Origin: Mac & Cheese with a Twist is a classic Southern American comfort food. It is typically made with macaroni pasta and a cheese sauce, but can be customized with additional ingredients like bacon, jalapenos, or breadcrumbs.
- Fresh Fruit Smoothies (Brazilian Dish): Kids will love blending up their favorite fresh fruits and juices to create tasty and healthy smoothies that are perfect for any time of day. Origin: Fresh Fruit Smoothies are a popular drink in many countries, but they originated in Brazil. They are made with fresh fruit, ice, and sometimes yogurt or milk.
Please Note: This course is nonrefundable after 01/15/2025.
- Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
- Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
- After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
- Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard. [Details about these activities, including club descriptions, schedules, and sign-up information, will be shared during the first week of school.]
