French Immersion Through Science Discovery

Class Description:
"French Immersion through Science" invites young learners to explore the wonders of science while enhancing their French language skills. This class is crafted for kindergarten to 2nd-grade students, offering a bilingual experience that combines science with language learning. Through engaging experiments and storytelling, children will delve into fundamental science concepts. Weekly activities include creating mini-volcanoes, making slime, and building balloon rocket cars, all designed to spark curiosity and foster critical thinking.

Impact on Educational and Personal Growth:

This course encourages children to develop a love for both science and French language through hands-on activities. By participating in interactive experiments, students will enhance their problem-solving skills, language proficiency, and creativity. The bilingual environment promotes cognitive flexibility and cultural awareness, helping students build confidence in both scientific inquiry and language acquisition.

Sample Lessons:

  • Volcano Experiment: Create a mini-volcano using baking soda, vinegar, and clay, introducing chemical reactions while reinforcing French vocabulary.
  • Slime Creation: Combine glue, water, and borax to make slime, exploring polymers and reactions in a bilingual context.
  • Balloon Rocket Car: Construct a simple rocket car with balloons and straws to learn about air pressure and propulsion, enhancing language skills through guided play.
  • Lava Lamp Creation: Mix vegetable oil, water, food coloring, and Alka-Seltzer tablets to explore density and buoyancy while practicing French terms.

Program Schedule:

  • Students have a supervised snack period in the HCCS cafeteria from 2:20pm to 2:45pm.
  • Instructional sessions are scheduled from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, followed by a brief transition period for students from 4:00pm to 4:15pm.
  • After classes and transitioning, students can participate in various engaging after-school activities from 4:15pm to 5:30pm.
  • Options include joining student clubs, studying in the HCES library (for grades 2-6) or attending storytelling sessions (for grades K-1), and having free play in the cafeteria or courtyard. [Details about these activities, including club descriptions, schedules, and sign-up information, will be shared during the first week of school.]
